Hints & Tips

1. Determining room dimensions

Determine the new room dimensions and positions of existing doors, windows, and skylights.  These will affect your bathroom design, new floorplan, and the positioning, shape and size of fixtures and fittings.  If adding, resiting or resizing doors/windows/skylights, allow for extra time, cost and tradespeople.
Decide if the bathroom will be part of a larger room or area (such as a master bedroom or poolside 'wet area') or a self-contained space?
Will you be restructuring the space? Altering the floor or ceiling; removing or adding internal walls; installing a sunken bath/spa/sauna or embedding fixtures into walls, floor or ceiling cavities will generally mean more people, time and costs.

2. Assessing existing materials and outlets

If your bathroom design is to incorporate laundry facilities it may require additional power and plumbing outlets. Assess the materials used in the existing bathroom (eg. concrete, wood, tiles or plasterboard). All require different solutions. Determine how much cavity space there is to work with in the walls, ceiling, and under-floor area. This may affect the type, configuration and positioning of pipes, wires and fittings.

FAQs

1. How much should I budget?

As a client you have plenty of choice regarding fittings, fixtures and finishes when it comes to your bathroom renovation and this means almost every budget can be accommodated.  A variety of factors will affect your final budget.  These include:

  • Size of the room
  • What type of tile you choose (ie ceramic or porcelain)?
  • How extensive the tiling will be (ie to the ceiling or a combination of tiles and paint)?
  • Choice of fittings
  • Choice of fixtures such as vanity units
  • Choice of finishes (ie hidden cistern system carries more expense to install because of the internal wall work required)

When setting a budget, consider the following:

  • The type of family you have and how much space they will need
  • Your usage requirements (ie does everyone get ready at the same time in the morning)
  • Your must-haves and what goes on your wish list
  • Where are you prepared to compromise?
  • Are there ways to reuse any part of the original bathroom (ie an original bath) in any form?

2. How long will it take?

How long the project will take depends on a number of external factors such as:

  • Whether the old bathroom must be demolished and removed before work can begin on the new room.
  • Extent of the modification required to the room itself.
  • Requirements of council permission if applicable.
